I was invited by some friends, John and Lori, to join them in a trip to Savannah, Georgia for New Year's Eve. I decided to take them up on it so took an extra day off work and was off to Atlanta on Thursday December 30th.
The 8:30 flight to Atlanta from Salt Lake City was cancelled and figured with all the people needing other flight options that the next direct flight (or two) would be over booked with passengers from the cancelled flight I decided to reroute myself through Houston, Texas. There was a slight chance I could make a tight connecting flight to ATL but it was only a 10 minute layover. Could have worked but my plane landed about 20 minutes late and the flight was already in the air when landing at IAH. So, had a couple hours to kill waiting for the next flight. I was able to find some free internet access after watching a few advertisements. I was able to make the next flight to ATL and my friends were waiting when I arrived.
We left the Atlanta area around 2pm on Friday the 31st taking around 5 hours to drive to Savannah. On the drive to Savannah we stopped along the way for dinner at zaxby's, then continued on to our hotel. At the hotel we checked in and dropped off our luggage, relaxed for a few minutes then headed out towards river street to walk along the coblestone road and check out the many shops that line the street.
On the way to river street we walked through the North Historic District (I think) that had a band going and looked to be the place to be at midnight with all the beer stands. Down on river street the fog was slowly rolling in and we walked along checking out the shops and heading towards one of the candy shops to pick up some pralines. We then headed back towards the area with music and beer.
As the time was approching midnight we headed back down to the river for the fireworks, but the fog had come in and was pretty thick so we decided to head back to the square with the music for the midnight festivities.
At midnight they sprayed lots of confetti from the rooftops and I tried to capture it on 'film'
HAPPY NEW YEAR |
Still need to work on hand held self portraits.
After the crowed started leaving we headed back to the hotel to get some sleep and get ready for Saturday.
On Saturday we woke up and had some coffee, showered and headed out. We first hit the hotel restaurant for a quick breakfast before heading out to Tybee Island.
Tybee Island is a popular beach town east of Savannah, we headed there to see the Tybee Island Light Station and Fort Screven's Battery Garlan.

After Tybee Island we drove through the Savannah Victorian Historic District and ended up at Forsyth Park to walk around and check out some of the houses and squares.
Mercer-Williams House |
In Forsyth Park there are many trees covered with spanish moss
It was an enjoyable walk through the park and around the historic district to see all of the houses and squares. The squares are named in honor or in memory of a person, persons or historical event, and if one is a history buff they could spend days in this area checking them out.
Some other photo's of the area
Candler Oak, over 270 years old |
Warren A. Candler hospital |
From reading online it seems they want to convert the hospital into a mixed use development (apartments and retail business).
It also seems I need to take more pictures or take notes as after walking around as I am not sure if we did anything else that evening or just went to dinner.
On Sunday morning we headed down to river street to have breakfast at Huey's restaurant. I believe it was mostly due to their beignets. After breakfast it was back to the hotel to get our luggage then head back to the Atlanta area.

After the weekend we relaxed on Monday then I was flying back to SLC on Tuesday.
